On the evening of September 13, the Chinese National Press and Publication Administration announced a new batch of approval numbers authorizing the release of new online games in the country. The latest list, which includes a total of 73 games, finally includes titles developed by major game companies NetEase and Tencent.

An “Approval Number” is a license for publishing games in China, representing a legal document to protect the developer’s copyright, as well as an approval document for the game to be published online for the indoor market. The list of newly approved games this time includes NetEase“Allstar Streetball Party”. It’s the first time NetEase got such a number after approvals resumed in April this year. Touched by this news, NetEaseNasdaq shares rose before the market opened on Sept. 14 Eastern Time.

The “Health Defense” of Nanjing Wangdian Technology Co., Ltd. also approved. The company is 100% owned by a subsidiary of Tencent. The chairman of the game publishing company is Hou Xiaonan, chairman of Tencentit is Chinese literaturea company whose principal activity is the operation of an online literature platform, and vice president of the platform and content group of Tencent. The game was first released in May 2021 at the Tencent Annual gaming conference.

In addition, Shenzhen Zhongqingbaowang Network Technology’s “Xeno Command”, CMGE Technology’s “Rakshasa Street MOBILE” and XD Inc.’s “Jianghu Simulator” PC game have also been approved. According to CMGE Technology, the firm has obtained five approval numbers, and these games will be launched in the second half.

Many Chinese game companies recently announced their 2022 interim reports. TencentRevenue from the gaming business in the second quarter of this year was 42.5 billion yuan ($6.1 billion), down 1% year-on-year and 3% month-on-month. NetEaseThe growth rate of in the first half of the year remained stable, and the revenue growth rate of its gaming business in the first and second quarters both exceeded 15%. 37Games and Perfect World each reported growth in net profit attributable to their parent companies in the first half of the year, while the performance of G‑bits Network Technology and Zhejiang Century Huatong Group declined to varying degrees.

According to game company performance in the first half, several game companies whose net income attributable to owners increased year-on-year said they relied primarily on “old” games to contribute to their performance, and the influence of homologation numbers has not been fully demonstrated.

It is worth mentioning that exploring foreign markets has become a new strategic choice for many Chinese game companies in recent years. In the first quarter of this year, NetEase CEO William Ding has set a goal of achieving a 40-50% overseas market share for his gaming business. According to the “January-June 2022 China Game Industry Report”, in the first half of 2022, overseas domestic game revenue recorded positive growth. Bustafellows is one of the strongest candidates for a potential anime adaptation. It is full of beautifully designed characters and stunning visuals. With stunning character designs and tons of action, Birushana would be the perfect anime for fans of demon slayer and Samurai Champloo.

RELATED: The 10 Best Anime-Based Tabletop Games

Whether Enchanted Cafe were to get its own anime, it would be a charming reverse harem series in the same vein as Ouran High School Host Club. The game is full of beautiful and simplicity-worthy characters, so any anime adaptation would surely be a smash hit for that reason alone.

1 Piofiore: Fated Memories Would Be The Italian Mafia Anime Fans Have Been Waiting For

As the Chiefs prepare to open their 2022 campaign in Glendale against the Arizona Cardinals, we look back at past season openers.

I sat here for a while and thought about how to start this post. Overthinking is often the deadliest poison to a writer’s mind and flow. The answer was right in front of me, but I was trying to concoct something Shakespearean to ignite an emotional connection to this piece with drops of curious foreshadowing to keep you mentally engaged. What am I thinking? I know my audience and I know all I have to say are three sweet, sweet words.

Football is back.

I don’t know about you, but seeing my social media calendars flooded with college football updates, scores, strikes and memes kept me in a continued state of football bliss this weekend. As a footballer, I have felt the anguish and sense of deprivation emanating from all my footballing brothers and sisters over the past few months. You have to understand, however, that going from the depths of football depravity to the overstimulation of total football immersion can be a shock to the system. Let me help you relax.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know the Kansas City Chiefs will travel to Glendale, Arizona this weekend to face Kyler Murray, Kliff Kingsbury and the Arizona Cardinals to open the 2022 season. The Chiefs enter Week 1 after a 12-5 regular season in 2021 that saw Kansas City advance and host the AFC Championship for a fourth straight year before falling to the Cincinnati Bengals to end their run in a third straight Super Bowl appearance.

The Cardinals are coming off a 2021 season that could be classified as the definition of hot and cold. They sprinted out of the gate in 2021, starting 7-0 with wins over playoff teams in the Titans, Rams and 49ers before heading into their bye week 9-2, atop the NFC. After the bye? The Cardinals were 2-4 and limped (literally and figuratively) into a Wild Card playoff berth. Their playoff series would be brief, as the Cardinals were eliminated by division rival and eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round.

While the Chiefs kicking off in the desert is certainly the highlight of the week for Chiefs Kingdom, the rest of the league is buzzing with excitement to get things going as well. The aforementioned Rams will have a first opportunity to show their super bowl bling to the world as they welcome this year’s Super Bowl betting favorite, the Buffalo Bills, to kick off the season on Thursday night. Around the league on Sunday, the excitement is in a couple of divisional matchups (Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, New England at Miami) as well as Tom Brady and the Buccaneers heading to Jerry’s World to face Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys.

Around AFC West, we’ll get a glimpse of the revamped Raiders and Chargers rosters in their first slugfest of the year – a rematch of the Week 18 thriller for the latest AFC Playoffs spot – so as the Raiders cross the desert on I-15 in Los Angeles to face Justin Herbert and the fashionable chargers. To cap off the week, Bronco Country’s newest resident Russell Wilson will ride with his new team in Seattle to face his old team, the Seahawks.

Back to the important part. Patrick Mahomes will lead a new Chiefs offense in their battle with the Cardinals with both excitement and uncertainty. Excitement because this is arguably the deepest receiving corps Mahomes has had to hand in his 5 years as the Chiefs’ starting QB, and uncertainty because the one constant in those previous groups (Tyreek Hill) is no longer there. Either way, the Chiefs come into the year with a young offensive line off the back of a massively successful first season billed as one of the best in the league in 2022, along with groups of running backs and running backs. tight ends reloaded.

Defensively, the Chiefs will rely heavily on a clinic-spurred youth movement that GM Brett Veach appears to have implemented in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Chiefs will have rookies contributing at all levels of defense, George Karlafits up front to Leo Chenal in the middle, complemented by Trent McDuffie, Bryan Cook, Jaylen Watson and others contributing at the back of the unit. While the unit appears to be fast and exciting, it will undoubtedly take time for them to gel on the court with opposing attacks firing live balls in the regular season.

While we don’t know exactly how all the pieces, especially the new ones, will fall into place during the 2022 regular season, we do know how head coach Andy Reid has prepared the team to open the regular season historically. . . This answer: dominant.

In Andy Reid’s nine seasons as Chiefs head coach, KC is 8-1 in the opening games of the season averaging an 8.9-point margin of victory. The Chiefs averaged 31.7 points per game in the season openers – 36.3 in the Mahomes era – and only managed to cover twice in that span. .

Learn more about the Mahomes era. Since Mahomes is the starting quarterback, the Chiefs haven’t lost on Opening Day. In his 4 Day 1 starts, Mahomes had 1,182 passing yards and 13 touchdowns with no interceptions. Let’s take a look at those four games and performances so we can take a look at Sunday’s opener against the Cardinals.

Looking for a good high school football game to watch in Week 3, but don’t want to travel far.

We have the best games in the Fort Worth area here:

Allen (1-1) vs. Arlington Martin (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Choctaw Stadium, Arlington

Martin cracked the Top 10 State Rankings at No. 9 after beating Cedar Hill to start 2-0. Anthony Crenshaw shone on defense with 14 tackles, a forced fumble, two interceptions and a touchdown. Martin is also No. 2 in the Class 6A Zone standings and started the season with a big win at home against Austin Lake Travis.

Keep looking for Crenshaw on D with 5 star corner Javien Toviano, the top high school football player in the Fort Worth area. Running back Zaire Barrow will lead the offense.

Allen, No. 23 in the state, was knocked out by St. John Bosco of California in the season opener but bounced back to beat Houston King 49-14 last week. Mike Hawkins threw for three touchdowns and Kayvion Sibley rushed for three scores and 228 yards.

Martin hasn’t lost a home game since 2018. The Warriors are continuing that momentum. Give me Bob Wager and company, 31-24.

Argyle (2-0) vs. Grapevine (2-0)

7:00 p.m. Friday, Mustang-Panther Stadium

It’s a battle between two teams ranked by state and region when the Eagles visit the Mustangs.

Argyle is the highest ranked Class 5A region team and the highest ranked state team in Class 5A Division 2. Grapevine is #4 in the region and #6 in the state.

Who will improve to 3-0?

The Eagles won a shootout, 56-49 over Lucas Lovejoy in Week 2. Argyle rushed for 569 yards. Landon Farris had 233 rushing yards and a touchdown. RJ Bunnell rushed for 193 yards and four touchdowns. Jacob Robinson added 114 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The Mustangs defeated Azle, 58-14. Evan Baum passed for 230 yards and three scores. He also rushed for two scores. Parker Polk rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown and also caught a 39-yard touchdown. Hank Miller scored for 76 yards and Sammy Kelley also caught a touchdown from Baum.

Expect another offensive firefight. Give me Argyle by a hair, 49-42.

Aledo (0-2) vs. Justin Northwest (1-1)

7 p.m. Thursday, ISD North West Stadium

The district starts for the Bearcats and Texans and for Aledo a few things are at stake. Aledo has the longest district winning streak in the nation at 103 games, a streak that began in 2007.

But on the other hand, Aledo, who lost to Dallas Parish and Denton Guyer, hasn’t been 0-3 since 1990.

For Northwest, the Texans lost a heartbreaker at home last week, 47-39 to McKinney North. However, the 4-star committed quarterback from Texas Tech strong jake accounted for over 400 yards and four touchdowns.

The Texans fight to the end, but the Bearcats keep the streak alive. Give me Aledo, 38-30.

Fort Worth Wyatt (2-0) vs. Fort Worth Dunbar (0-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Clark Stadium, Fort Worth

It’s a showdown in Fort Worth on Friday between the Chaparrals and the Wildcats. The two teams met last season where Wyatt won 49-26.

Wyatt beat Joshua last week to make it 2-0 for the first time since 2017. The Chaparrals started this season 4-0 while Dunbar is looking for his first win this fall.

Wyatt averages 30 points per game.

Dunbar scored 57 points last week but gave up 70 to Ponder in a loss.

This one is going to be fun. Give me Wyatt, 45-36.

Lucas Lovejoy (1-1) vs. North Crowley (2-0)

7 p.m. Thursday, Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium, Fort Worth

Lovejoy heads west this week as the Leopards look to bounce back from a loss to Argyle in Week 2. Lovejoy dropped from second place in the Class 5A Division 2 States standings after a 56-49 loss. The Leopards’ D gave up 569 rushing yards and more than 700 total yards.

In two games, Lovejoy is averaging 50 points.

Meanwhile, North Crowley moved up to No. 3 in the Class 6A Zone standings after beating Arlington.

The Panthers put up 50 points in Week 1 and the defense is allowing 13 points per game, led by Texas 4-Star Linebacker S’Maje Burrell. He is the No. 12 ranked player on Star-Telegram’s Top 100 and was the district’s co-defensive MVP last season after having 104 tackles, 13 for loss, five sacks and four forced fumbles.

North Crowley will need to be near perfect to win. But it will be close. Give me Lovejoy 33-28.

We finally got there! NFL Week 1 is near and it all starts this Thursday when the Buffalo Bills travel to face the defending champion Los Angeles Rams. They are the two best teams in the league and could possibly be a preview of the Super Bowl. This is just one of many great games to watch in NFL Week 1, as we’re about to kick off the best time of the year in just a few days.

NFL Week 1 Games to Watch

Bills vs. Rams

These two teams will kick off the 2022-23 season on Thursday Night Football and it will most likely be the best game of Week 1 in the NFL. Los Angeles Rams just won the Super Bowl while Buffalo Tickets going into this season as favorites to win it all.

As mentioned, the Bills enter this season as Super Bowl favorites and why wouldn’t they be? They have the MVP favorite at quarterback in Josh Allenwho leads an explosive attack with Stefan Diggs, and one of the best defenses in the game in recent years. The bills also added Von Millerwho played a key role in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory.

They finished 11-6 last season and were considered a team to go all the way, but fell heartbreakingly when Patrick Mahomes led his side to the basket in just 13 seconds to send the game into overtime. which led to an eventual winner. The Bills have a rematch in mind and what bigger test than the reigning Week 1 champions?

The Rams made it to the Super Bowl in the 2018 season with Jared Goff at quarterback but lost by scoring just three runs against the Patriots. Everyone felt like they were on the verge of escaping, but something had to change. It was then that the team traded for Matthew Stafford last offseason and the rest is history.

They went 12-5 with Cooper Kupp having one of the best seasons of any wide receiver in NFL history as he won Offensive Player of the Year with nearly 2,000 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. Without forgetting a defense with Aaron Donaldvon Miller and Jalen Ramsey. Who knows? This NFL Week 1 game could be a preview of the Super Bowl.

Buccaneers versus Cowboys

These two teams faced each other in the first week of last season and they are doing it again this season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won 12 games in 2021 and were set for another Super Bowl run until they met the eventual defending champions in the divisional round. A little after, Tom Brady announced his retirement. What many consider to be the greatest of all time has finally hung up his boots.

Not so fast. Not even two months later, Brady announces that he is returning to football. He has unfinished business to attend to and plans to get his eighth Super Bowl. With an explosive offense and a hungry defense, Brady is certainly capable of doing just that.

The Dallas Cowboys looking to build on their 13-4 record from 2021. Playing in the NFC East certainly helps, but some people think this team can take it to the next level. The offense may have lost a step on paper, but many think Dak Prescott is a strong MVP candidate and that Ezekiel Elliott may have a resurgence this year.

Add to that the second year of one of the Defensive Player of the Year nominees, Micah Parsons, and what could be an even better defense, and this team could make some noise. How much noise? Who knows, because when expectations are high for the Cowboys, they find a way to let you down. This NFL Week 1 game could set the tone for both teams and already tell us a lot about them for the 2022 season.

Chiefs vs. Cardinals

There are questions regarding the two teams heading into the season. wide receiver Tyreek Hill asked for an exchange Kansas City Chiefs this offseason and he was granted as he was traded to the Miami Dolphins. Patrick Mahomes and that offense relied on Hill’s speed almost every time he was on the court. They’ll miss his sudden burst and YAC yards, but this attack still has the pieces to do some damage.

The Chiefs still have one of the best relationships in the game with Mahomes and Travis Kelce. When they need to rely on the running game, Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a reliable option. A Deep Threat has been added in Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Ju Ju Smith Schuster was also signed. The attack will be fine, it is the defense that still has questions. Even so, this team is still one of the favorites to win everything in a very tough AFC.

They will have a tough game on the road to start the season against the Arizona Cardinals. Going into Week 8 last season, the Cardinals were undefeated at 7-0 until they suffered a narrow loss to the Packers. After that, the wheels started falling off. They’ve lost 6 of their last 10 games (including Green Bay) and been outplayed by the Rams in Wild Card play.

Arizona is looking to rewrite the ship and show they are the team that started the season 7-0. Newly Paid Quarterback Kyler Murray leads this offense with new skills Marquise Brown in the same way AJ Green and tight end Zach Ertz. The Cardinals will also have one of the best wide receivers in the game, DeAndre Hopkins, when he returns from his six-game suspension. This defense also still has plenty of scattered pieces to make noise. This team has a lot to prove and will be tested against a very tough Kansas City team.

Other games to watch

Steelers vs. Bengals
Packers vs. Vikings
Raiders vs. Chargers
Patriots against Dolphins
Browns vs. Panthers

A French professional tennis player who reached a career-high No. 39 last year has accused her former coach of rape and sexual assault.

The French Tennis Federation said in a statement on Saturday that it ‘supported’ Fiona Ferro, a 25-year-old who lost in qualifying at the US Open last week, ‘in the process she engaged against his former coach. , Pierre Bouteyre.” The federation added that it is ”examining the possibility of filing a civil complaint in this case. “I have full confidence in my country’s justice system and I confirm that I do not wish to make any further statement on the criminal investigation,” Ferro said.

The Associated Press generally does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, which Ferro did.

Ferro is the latest tennis player to draw attention to the issue of protecting athletes from predatory coaches.

”We commend Fiona for having the courage to come forward with these allegations. We are pleased to see a full investigation and ongoing legal proceedings,’ a WTA spokesperson said via an emailed statement on Saturday. ”The WTA is committed to ensuring a safe environment throughout our tour. Safeguarding requires vigilance, and we continue to invest in education, training and resources to enhance our efforts.” After winning her third-round match at the US Open on Saturday, the two-time champion Australian Open Viktoria Azarenka has been questioned about the manipulation and exploitation of young players by coaches.

She said the WTA Players Council, of which she is a member, is considering backing up an ‘o. 1 subject…because we see these vulnerable young women who (are) taken advantage of in different situations.” Mentioning Ferro, Azarenka said, “I applaud her for her courage. I hope this situation, she will come out of it stronger and that tennis is not ruined for her because of it. This is, I think, a very, very heavy subject. But that’s the subject that needs to come out more.” In March, a tennis player held a press conference after she sued the American Tennis Association, claiming the governing body had failed to protect her of a trainer who she claims sexually assaulted her at one of his training centers when she was 19.

Kylie McKenzie says trainer Anibal Aranda touched her inappropriately at the USTA training facility in Orlando, Florida, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court in central Florida. The lawsuit says Aranda, who was employed by the USTA for about seven years and then fired, used his position as a USTA coach to gain access to vulnerable female athletes.

In April, former tennis player Pam Shriver, now a TV commentator, revealed in a first-person account published by British newspaper The Telegraph that she “had an inappropriate and damaging relationship with my coach who was very older” which began when she was 17 and he was 50.

After Ferro’s indictment was announced, Shriver tweeted, “Sending my best support to Fiona Ferro. The best way to improve protection is to tell our stories.” Ferro has two career titles and reached the fourth round of the 2020 French Open for the best Grand Slam performance of his career. She is currently ranked 259th.

“We would like to express our support for Fiona Ferro, respecting the presumption of innocence, at a time which we know is particularly difficult for her”, declared Gilles Moretton, president of the French federation. “The FFT’s sports integrity unit is currently assisting him and we will do everything to help him rebuild his life.”

College football is back! For the first time since late November last year, every conference at the FBS level will have games, and there’s plenty of action to kick us off in 2022. The Michigan Wolverines will face the Colorado State Rams of the West Mountain Season launch conference at the Grande Maison. But there are plenty of other intriguing matchups across the board. Here’s the perfect viewing guide for all the action on Saturday.

Also, don’t forget to go to Draft Kings Sports Book to make all your bets for this weekend!

No. 8 Michigan Wolverines vs. Colorado State Rams

  • TV: ABC
  • Time: Noon ET
  • Location: Ann Arbour, Mich.
  • Time: 77 degrees, partly cloudy
  • DraftKings Odds: MICH-30.5, WHERE : 61.5, ML: MICH -8000, CSU +2000
  • Best bet: Over 61.5

It should be a great day for football on Saturday when the Rams come to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines. Quarterback Cade McNamara will start this week and JJ McCarthy, who starts Week 2 against Hawaii, should also get some playing time. Both quarterbacks battling for stats in a positional battle means they won’t probably won’t let go.

Michigan’s offense this season could be even more talented than last season with a revamped offensive line and wide receiver Ronnie Bell back on offense. In 2021, the Wolverines have scored 47 points against Western Michigan and 63 against Northern Illinois in two of their first three games. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw similar totals in this contest.

If that were the case, the players would only need the Rams to get 14-17 points to get the upper hand, and the Rams have a new head coach who loves passing. Jay Norvell, who was at Nevada last season, had Carson Strong at quarterback, who finished eighth in the nation in passing yards last year with 4,175. He will bring the same logic to CSU with Clay Millen getting the go-ahead, a big-armed redshirt freshman who moved with his head coach from Nevada to CSU. Even if it’s in garbage time, it would be realistic to think that Colorado State could rack up enough points to help get to the top.

Michigan should win this game by a landslide and with a ton of offense on both sides, I think the most hits here with a big win for Michigan.

Former Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning took over from Mario Cristobal in Eugene, and his goal will be to revamp that side of the ball. Playing against his old team in week 1 will be one of the scenarios to start the season.

Former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix is likely to be Oregon’s starter. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart I called him one of the best athletes he had ever seen. The Ducks will likely try to move the ball on the ground in a pro-style offense with new offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, who is averaging around 37.5 rushing attempts per game at state of florida last season.

It’s going to be a recipe for disaster against a Georgia defense that allowed just 2.6 yards per carry last season. Even though the Bulldogs have lost eight starters from their championship-winning defense in 2021, they still have quite a bit of firepower on this side of the ball. Jalen Carter, one of the best defensive linemen in the country, will be a big help in the transition of this defense.

Offensively, Georgia returns Stetson Bennett to quarterback, who is good, but not great. They lost both starters on the NFL return to Zamir White and James Cook. And George Pickens, their best receiver, and the left side of the offensive line, have also moved on. I expect them to come out and not be as explosive on that side of the ball to start the season. Plus, Lanning is going to know exactly how to attack Bennett and that offense.

A defensive battle should be underway, but Georgia should be expected to pull away, fairly easily, for a win mostly at home. However, that 52.5 rating seems reasonably high for two good defenses and a few offenses with some question marks.

  • TV: ABC
  • Time: 7:30 p.m. ET
  • Location: Columbus, Ohio
  • Time: 79 degrees and sunny
  • DraftKings Odds: OSU-17, WHERE : 59.5, ML: OSU -800, ND +575
  • Best bet: ND +17 (and possibly higher as game time approaches)

Believe it or not, the Buckeyes have a history of close games or losses to top-ranked opponents early in the season. Ohio State lost to Oklahoma in a similar No. 5 vs. No. 2 game in 2017. No. 15 TOS hooked up with the Buckeyes a year later, before Ohio State pulled out late for a 40-28 win at Columbus. Last season they lost to a mediocre Oregon team at home.

Everyone wonders what that Ohio State defense will look like in 2022. If they’re among the best in the country, the Buckeyes could be favorites for a national championship with their overpowered offense. However, that was their downfall against Oregon and Michigan last season, especially in the running game. Defensive replacements this year will likely be several young players.

Notre Dame will focus on football management under new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. The team has one of the biggest offensive lines in the country that also boasts experience. They should be much improved in 2022 with a few running backs battling for the No. 1 gig. Leading should be Chris Tyree, who averaged 6.8 yards per carry behind a strong offensive line in 2020. He was injured last year and his numbers went down for it, but if he’s healthy and the line improves as it should, he and others could be in for a big season.

Defensively, the Irish seem solid. One of the nation’s top safeties, Brandon Joseph, has been traded from Northwestern to add to an already impressive secondary that should go up against CJ Stroud and his top receivers, like Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Under new head coach Marcus Freeman, the defense has a chance to shine right away in Week 1.

I like Ohio State winning the game, partly because it’s in Columbus and Notre Dame hasn’t beaten Ohio State since 1936. But I expect that that the Fighting Irish cover the spread, especially because it could be the second-highest gap between the best -5 opponents in college football history. The first one? No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Notre Dame in the 2020 Rose Bowl with Bama -18.5. The final score was 31-14, with the Irish narrowly covering.

Rice’s volleyball team didn’t pass up a double header on Friday or an abysmal first set on Saturday, as they started their season with three straight wins this weekend at Louisiana State University’s Tiger Classic. in Baton Rouge. The team opened the tournament with a pair of sweeps before battling it out for a 3-2 win over LSU to close out the weekend. According to head coach Genny Volpe, although their offense was still going strong, the team was strong in all other facets of the game.

“We’re still working on our attacking pace, but I was very happy with our defense and service reception for the most part,” Volpe said.

The Owls’ opener, against the University of Houston, was something of a logistical question mark as the two teams, normally less than four miles apart, traveled more than 250 miles to face off at the Maravich Assembly Center. The first set was tight throughout, as Rice never led by more than five points, but the Owls managed to win it by a score of 25-22. That would be the closest the Cougars have gotten all night to securing a set. Rice won the second set 25-18 behind five kills from fifth-year senior center blocker Anota Adekunle. The Owls repeated the trick in the third set behind five more kills from Adekunle and 15 assists from fifth-year senior Carly Graham to seal the victory – the 350th of Volpe’s career.

The Owls took the court three hours later against Samford University. Whatever fatigue the team might have felt from the quick turnaround certainly did not show up as they took a 10-1 lead and won the first set 25-15. . According to Adekunle, the team had prepared for the double header and managed to avoid its worst effects.

“It wasn’t as tiring as I expected,” Adekunle said. “I felt really good physically after playing our last game on Friday. I think the training we had in practice prepared us for this.

The Bulldogs kept the second set tight, taking a 17-12 lead at one point, but the Owls managed to come back behind a late winning streak from second outside/right side hitter Lola Foord. A dominant third set saw the Owls complete their second sweep of the day.

After winning their first six sets of the weekend, hosts LSU gave Rice a bit of a shock by winning Saturday’s opening set 25-13. According to Adekunle, the Owls were surprised by LSU’s quick start, but once they settled into the game, they were able to pick up the momentum.

“The game of volleyball is often a momentum game,” Adekunle said. “LSU came out with so much fire it just took us a minute to adjust to it. Bad sets happen all the time and unfortunately we were on that side.

The Owls’ deficit didn’t last long, however. Rice won the next two sets by 7 and 9 points respectively to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers managed to force a fifth set, but three unanswered runs in a 12-12 tie gave the Owls their third victory in three tries. After the comeback win, Volpe said the turnaround was more the result of the team’s composure than any tactical change.

“[We made] not really any adjustments,” Volpe said. “The team started flat and so we stayed true to ourselves and trusted that we were going to get through this, which we did. The team stayed calm and adapted to our service game and pass, which made a big difference.

Over the weekend, junior outside hitter Sahara Maruska led the Owls with 34 kills, while Adekunle was just second with 29. Graham, the team’s lead setter, provided 102 assists while the libero junior Nia McCardell earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors. for his 46 digs over the three games. According to Maruska, she is playing a more active role both in attack and defense this season.

“Last year my role in the team was to go into the game and get as many kills as possible while I was there,” Maruska said. “This year, I play defense in the back row and I continue to be present in the net in attack.”

Next, the team travels to Eugene, Oregon for a pair of games – a Friday afternoon game against the University of California at Davis and a Saturday night game against No. Oregon. As the season resumes, Maruska said she’s confident the Owls, who received the 30th most votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings this week, will find their groove.

“I have so much faith in this team,” Maruska said. “I think we have a very solid season ahead of us, knowing that everyone will be firing on all cylinders in every game.”

Analysis: 94% of match officials have experienced verbal abuse in their career and 23% have experienced some form of physical abuse

By Christmas Brick, Gavin Breslin, Marc Shevlin and Stephane Shannon, University of Ulster

Exercising has many benefits for our physical and mental health. Despite this, recent high-profile examples, such as that of Simone Biles during the Tokyo Olympics, show that athletes can experience mental health issues due to the performance demands that competitive sport can bring. As a result, recent years have seen a welcome resurgence in awareness to research and talks developed to meet the mental health and wellness needs of athletes.

But one group of individuals has received comparatively little attention: match officials. Like athletes, referees, referees and judges charged with the vital role of fairly applying the rules of our sports may experience distress from non-sport and sport-specific sources. This can range from social lives and constrained family demands, to media scrutiny and mistakes made during games when applying the rules of the game.

One of the main sources of distress for match officials is the experience of abuse from spectators, coaches and players, leading many referees to leave his role entirely. These abuses are often the result of decisions made by match officials, decisions which may not be seen as the “right decision” by spectators, coaches or players and which may lead to confrontations.

From RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland, Gaelic football referee David Gough on referee abuse

Very little is known how this abuse affects the mental health of match officials. To help answer this question, we undertook a study Gaelic games bring together officials to explore the impact of episodes of abuse on their mental health, well-being and intentions to leave their roles.

We interviewed 438 Gaelic games referees, most of whom (98%) were referees. We asked them if they had ever experienced verbal or physical abuse against them during matches. Examples of verbal abuse included intimidation, threats of harm, swearing, or harassment, while physical abuse included hitting, shoving, or punching. We also asked them how often they had experienced each type of abuse and from whom they had experienced this abuse.

To explore their mental health, we included questions about feelings of distress during the week after being abused (for example, whether they felt worried or tense), and questions about symptoms of anxiety, depression and mental well-being (feeling optimistic about the future, coping with problems well) during the previous two weeks. We also asked if episodes of abuse caused them to consider quitting their role as match referee.

From RTÉ News, the Oireachtas committee learns that referees have been attacked and abused on the pitch

We found that 94% of match officials had experienced verbal abuse during their career and 23% had experienced some form of physical abuse. Verbal abuse was mainly experienced twice or more per season, was more frequently encountered by younger and less experienced match officials and was mainly inflicted by (in order of ranking) managers/coaches, spectators and players. Physical abuse was most often experienced once or twice in a career and was mostly perpetrated by players and spectators.

What these results highlight is that the proportion of Gaelic games referees who have experienced abuse, and the frequency of it, is similar to that reported in Other sports. But the prevalence of physical violence among Gaelic Games match officials (23%) was higher than previously reported among English (19%) and Dutch (15%) football referees.

In terms of mental health effects, we found that match officials who experienced more frequent verbal abuse experienced higher distress, more symptoms of anxiety and depression, lower mental well-being and stronger intentions to leave their roles. Distress resulting from physical abuse had a similar impact and led to poorer mental health and stronger intentions to quit smoking. Physical abuse was also reported as more distressing by those who experienced it. While 5% of match officials tested positive for significant distress during the week after experiencing verbal abuse, that figure rose to 13% for those who experienced physical abuse.

From RTÉ News, RTE GAA correspondent Marty Morrissey on the Oireachtas committee report on abuse in sport

Each of these findings highlights important issues that need to be addressed. The fact that younger and less experienced match officials were subjected to more frequent verbal abuse may explain, in part, why many newly qualified referees quit soon after taking up their duties. To underscore the extent of this concern, a June 2022 advisory report published by the Joint Commission for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sports and Media on Eliminating Abuse in Sport noted that approximately 66% of referees in the Irish Football Association resign within two years of completing their beginners’ refereeing course. Violence was cited as the main reason for the decision to leave, a suggestion supported by our research.

Further still, 49% of referees in our study agreed that episodes of abuse caused them to consider leaving their role, with abuse cited as the main reason by 8% of officials who said they were considering leaving. in the next 12 months. Without referees, our matches simply could not take place and the experience of abuse is a factor that causes many referees to leave their role.

From RTÉ Sport in 2019, Davy Fitzgerald, then Wexford’s senior hurling director, explains why referees are under pressure

Based on our findings, we make the following recommendations to safeguard and protect match officials. Sports association support should include appropriate disciplinary action for reported episodes of abuse, training for match officials on conflict management to de-escalate conflict situations in games, and training to develop mental skills such as maintaining concentration and managing emotions during games. There should also be training in psychological coping strategies to cope with distress caused by abuse and therapeutic support to manage the mental health needs of match officials.

Clearly, the elimination of abuse against match officials is the primary objective of sports organisations. As such, it is important to recognize – whether we are spectators, coaches or players – that our behaviors impact the mental health of match officials long after the match is over. Therefore, changing the way we treat match officials is something we all have a responsibility for.

Reducing and eliminating abuse will help retain more referees and other match officials in our matches. It will also help maintain their sanity and make officiating a more enjoyable, rewarding and enjoyable experience. the reasons why many are motivated to take on the role in the first place.
