Emma Doran’s take on The Late Late Toy Show

Actress Emma Doran reflects on her relationship with the Toy Show and shamelessly chooses her favorite TV kids.

When I was small, The Late Late Toy Show It was for one thing and only one thing: to rehash Billy Barry’s children.

Of course, when I was a kid I dreamed of being a critically acclaimed performer beloved around the world, but you definitely wouldn’t. Especially with two older brothers.

No, the Toy show It was about seeing how frustrated the presenter was with the kids, how dumb the Billy Barrys were for enjoying playing and then having the absolute nerve to do it on TV.

My rage was only fueled when the camera turned to the audience. Didn’t my parents love me enough to sort tickets to Ireland’s hottest show? Didn’t they want to spend an evening in woolen Christmas sweaters and funny hats under the studio lights in November?

They could have had the chance to greet me on national television for a split second. And if they had really wanted to put in a little effort, they could have chatted with Uncle Gaybo and found a spot for me on the show for the following year – but no!

Over the years, to my surprise, the Toy show grew on me. And it keeps getting bigger and better. Surprise famous guests, matching family pajamas, extravagant themes, and a host who seems to really enjoy it all.

A crack in my armor must have happened when I became a mother, as I now spend most of my time watching the beautiful children scream with joy. The Late Late Toy Show is basically an ayahuasca ceremony for the elderly who don’t have the time or the money to do the real thing.

I’ll be honest Ryan’s Devil is in the draw, but they’re those damn cute kids to me every year. None of them are my own children, so I can pick my favorites without fear of judgment.

Here are my five best kids from the Toy Show (so far):

1. Aimee Keogh meets Ed Sheeran, 2014: Even though Aimee mentioned him third on her favorite popstar list, when Ed Sheeran suddenly appeared on set, Aimee’s excitement was infectious. She even got to sing along with everyone’s favorite ginger, and she did a really good job.

3. Adam and Kayla Burke: The Burke children have been reunited with their father, Graham Burke, after spending six months in Mali with the Irish army. I was so dehydrated crying after this one, I was almost in rigor mortis.

4. Sophie Maher: When Sophie told the nation that she was wearing a worry stone because of bullies, we all collectively decided that we had Sophie’s back until the end of time. You mess with Sophie, you mess with us!

5. Adam: It’s hard to remember a time when Adam, the boy who wants to travel to space, was not in our lives. It has been a busy time for Adam, and we can only assume that he will present The late show full time in 2022. But if we don’t sort out his space travel by the time summer vacation arrives, what are we even doing, folks? !
